The Ultimate Recovery Circuit to Maximize Your Restore Spa Experience at Healthworks Back Bay

We’re thrilled to share that updates are now complete at the Restore Spa at Healthworks Back Bay. The upgraded space now features a sauna with a Himalayan salt wall, a steam room, a whirlpool, and cold plunge, allowing members to enjoy a full body reset with restorative hot and cold contrast therapy.

When visiting the all-new Restore Spa at Healthworks Back Bay, here’s a circuit that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and restored

Start with the Salt Block Sauna (8-12 minutes): Begin your journey in the salt room sauna, where the combination of dry heat and halotherapy creates the perfect opening act. The heated Himalayan salt blocks release negative ions while the moderate heat gently warms your muscles and opens your pores.

Move to the Steam Room (6-8 minutes): Transition to the traditional steam room where the humid heat penetrates deeper into your muscles. This step amplifies the detoxification process while preparing your body for the temperature contrast ahead.

Relax in the Whirlpool (5-10 minutes): Ease into the warm, bubbling waters of the whirlpool. The hydrotherapy massage helps maintain your elevated body temperature while the jets work out any remaining tension in your muscles.

Finish with the Cold Plunge (30-90 seconds): Complete the circuit with a brief but invigorating cold plunge. This dramatic temperature shift triggers your body’s natural recovery mechanisms and seals in the benefits of your heat therapy.

The Science Behind the Benefits

This heat-to-cold progression activates your parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones like cortisol while boosting circulation. The salt therapy component adds respiratory benefits, potentially helping to clear airways and reduce inflammation. The contrast therapy between hot and cold stimulates the release of endorphins and norepinephrine, creating that post-spa glow that lasts for hours.

The entire circuit should take 20-30 minutes and can be repeated 2-3 times depending on your comfort level. Always listen to your body and stay hydrated throughout the experience.

This thoughtful progression transforms individual spa amenities into a comprehensive wellness ritual that addresses both physical recovery and mental restoration.

Please note that all Healthworks clubs and Republic Fitness Davis Square offer Restore Spa amenities. Steam room, saunas and spa showers can be found at Healthworks Back Bay, Cambridge and Coolidge Corner. Cold plunge and whirlpool are not available at Coolidge Corner. To learn more, click here
