Teacher Feature: Get to Know Rosie Mulford

What was your intial experience with yoga?

My very first introduction to yoga was in 1974 when my neighbor, Eve Diskin, then the president of the American Yoga association, came to my school to teach me how to do yoga. In all honesty the only thing I remember is that we did shoulder stand! And I thought it was so cool! What was cooler was that I was then given the opportunity to teach the younger kids how to do yoga Asana. Looking back all these years later, I’m not sure what I was teaching !! But it was beautiful and fun. We were fortunate enough to be in a school that was on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove Florida. So we would take our little white towels and sit on them and do yoga overlooking the Bay.  I didn’t realize back then what a gift it was!

What do you find most rewarding about teaching yoga?

The most rewarding thing about teaching is my students! I am in awe of their ability to honor their bodies, to expand their minds, and their hearts, and to constantly be an example to me of what I try to teach: kindness, compassion, truth, and always staying connected to the Divine.  My students continue to remind me of my personal motto:  “ the 12-steps of AA saved my life, Yoga taught me how to live it”

the 12-steps of AA saved my life, Yoga taught me how to live it

Do you have a favorite yoga pose?

My favorite yoga pose at this moment is wide-legged-split. It reminds me to stay open, to kiss the ground!

In 1974, Rosie took her first yoga class in Coconut Grove, Florida. Her instructor was Eve Diskin-then the Director of the American Institute of Yoga. During college and for a short time after, Rosie concentrated on her ballet studies, incorporating her yogic knowledge into her ballet exercises. For the next ten years, she began an intense practice incorporating Bikram and The Barkan Method under the guidance of Jimmy Barkan in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Rosie is certified in Pre-natal yoga, Vinyasa Flow yoga, Children’s Yoga,Y12SR, and has her 500-hour ERYT from Yoga Alliance. Her passion lately is teaching the ways in which combining Yoga with the 12 Steps of AA can offer a freedom from addictions in life- after all, we are each addicted to something! Rosie likes to mimic the challenges we face in real life on the mat, practicing how to share compassion and kindness in everything we do.
